Chapter 34


IN QUIN'S APT....[Man is shocked, still holding on to the phone.]
Quin: Man, what happened? Why do you look like this?

Man: May! I think May is in trouble.

Quin: What? [confused]

Man: Com'on, let's head to Temple st. [Quin quickly grabed her keys.]


IN TEMPLE ST.....ONE OF THE ALLEYS....[May is being surrounded by a group of people.]
A Woman: Miss? Miss? [shaking May's shoulders.]

A Man: Is she dead?

A Woman: Nonsense, she is still breathing.

A Man: I'll call the ambulance. [Man and Quin in the corners of the same alley.]

Man: I think she is talking about this pharmacy. [points.]

Quin: Look, there is a crowd there. [They immediately ran over. They were able to sneak by the crowd and went up to May.]

Quin and Man: May? May!

Quin: Why is she like this? [suddenly May started to move and regained her conscious.]

May[still feeling dizzy and lost.]: What? What happened?

Quin: You fainted and didn't even know what hit you?

Man: How are you feeling?

May: Nothing really serious. I just have one heck of an ache on my neck. [scrubing her neck.]

Quin: We should bring you to the hospital for a complete body check-up.

May: I really don't need to. I don't feel any massive pain. Just bring me home, I can still walk.

Quin: If you insist.


BACK TO THE APT....[the door bell is ringing constantly and impatiently.]
Quin: I'm coming, I'm coming. [opens the door.] Wow, you look like you ran the olympics or something.

Nam[still catching his breath.]: Very funny, where, where's May?

Quin: Inside. Don't worry, it's nothing serious. [Nam quickly went in. May was surprised to see the hurt look in Nam's face. She sense that he really cares for her. Nam sat by May's side. When Quin was about to close the door, Fei and Chi San showed up and stopped it.] Hey, come in. Nam is here too.

Fei[smiles]: Yeah we know, we saw. A second there, I thought he was running after a robber, I guess this proves me wrong. [Nam and May made a face at Fei.]

Quin: Hey, now I do sense something is going on. Hey, do you Chi San? [Chi San smiled and nodded.] What about you Man? [Fei suddenly gave stare to Man. He then decided to eye sweep the apartment.]

Man: Don't embarass them. Well, then again, maybe putting them on stage won't hurt once in a while.

Nam: Ok ok, enough jokes. You don't want me to fire Fei, do you Quin? [They all stopped] That's better.

Quin: Hey, we are just happy for you.

May: I don't know what you guys are talking about. [embarrassly walked back into her room.]

Nam: Look what you did? Don't play anymore. [May came back out.]

May: You all seem to be forgetting that I'm the point of interest here. You all came for me, not to laugh behind me!

Chi San: Oh yeah. Ok back to business. Are you ok now?

May: Even though it's a bit too late, I'll take it anyway. I'm fine, nothing serious like Quin said.

Nam: Are you sure? I really think you should go to the hospital for a full check-up.

Man: Yes.

Chi San: Fainting can be a serious thing.

May: Faint. Yes, I did faint but it was cause by an attack.

Nam: What? Who could have attacked you?

May: I don't know. This person came from behind. I was too occupied on the phone otherwise I would have been more alert.

Quin: This is getting to weird and scary.

Chi San: So, all this person did was knock you out? Nothing else?

Quin: What more do you want?

Chi San: No, I mean, obviously this attacker didn't come for money or possession of any kind and don't have sexual desire in mind. Then what was the whole point of this attack? This person just didn't like the way May looked? Com'on. Am I the only one who don't understand?

Fei: No, you have a point. I don't understand either.

Chi San: Did you somehow created an enemy you don't know about? It almost seem like a warning of some kind. [Nam looked like he understands now but kept quiet.]

Quin: Yeah, it does.

Man: Look at May, she's getting too tired. Let's question her tomorrow or something. She needs rest.

May: To think of it, I really think I do. You guys help yourself, I need a beauty sleep. [goes into her room.]

Chi San: We have to get going to by the way.

Fei: Yeah, let's go.

Quin: I'll do the honor and escort you two gentlemen down.

Chi San: Oh please be more direct and just say you want personal time with Fei. [Quin gently hit Chi San on the arm.] What about you Nam?

Nam: I'm leaving too but I have to stop by the bathroom first. You guys leave first. [Quin, Fei and Chi San left the apt.]


DOWNSTAIRS...THE PARKLOT OF THE BUILDING...
Chi San: Ok, I know the drill. I'll leave you two lovebirds along. [Chi San droved off.]

Fei[as soon as Chi San is out of site, he quickly grabbed on to Quin's hands tightly.]: This time I am seriously asking you and hope you can give me a desirable answer.

Quin: Fei, why are you acting like this all of a sudden?

Fei: I'm worried. I extremely worried about the safety of you and Sum Oiy. Too much is happening at once. I can not and will not let you and Sum Oiy have anymore sufferings of any kind.

Quin[touched]: I don't have the slightest idea of what's going on and will not know if I will be apart of this little hunt but all I know is that just because of you and your words, I will take exceptionally good care Sum Oiy and myself. You have my word.

Fei: No, that's not enough.

Quin: Then what is considered enough for you?

Fei: Having me by you and Sum Oiy's side at the most often times if possible.

Quin: Are you suggesting that we move in with you?

Fei: Is that asking too much?

Quin: No, not at all. I just don't feel right, afterall, it's been 3 long years already.

Fei: Can you not trust me?

Quin: After what we went through, we have gone back to this stage? Can I not trust you?

Fei: I don't mean it that way.

Quin: If I have not trusted you, did you think I would have gone back to you? Would I have given my life in your hands? Given birth to our child?

Fei[hugged Quin for reassurance]: I'm sorry, I'm sorry I even asked. You know I didn't intented to make it sound like that. I'm an idoit for saying what I said.

Quin: Now, now don't be too harsh on yourself. [smiles]

Fei: Most importantly of all is that, I don't feel too safe in this apt. Don't feel safe about the people in it.

Quin: What do you mean by that?

Fei: I just mean, I don't know how to put it in words. [paused for a sec and then brought up odd questions.] Does Ah Man really wear a size 6, nike brand sneakers?

Quin: Huh? What is with these question? And they are all about Man? Don't tell me the person you don't feel safe about is Man?

Fei: Why wouldn't I. Kwan, I am a cop. If I feel something is wrong, I need to find the truth behind it. Besides there are many things to be suspicious about Ah Man.

Quin: Like?

Fei: When I was up there, I saw, I saw that the bottom of her sneakers are covered with red dried paint. I done my own research. I took the stains of the foot-steps for examination.

Quin: That doesn't mean anything. You have to remember, she was attacked the night before Tong Sum's grave was poured with red paint. She was poured with red paint too, so it's very normal for her sneakers to be stainned with red paint.

Fei: Fine, maybe you can argue away with that but what about the bracelet? And what if she planned out her own attack that night to cover up her suspiciousness. I could have been a one woman show.

Quin: Even if the elements of act and intent is present, how do you know for sure that Man did all this? If someone wants to frame her, they will think of anything, including that. Please think clearly, how could she have done so many things at once. Someone had to turn the light back on and off and let the rats out? Besides, she was holding on to Chi San's hand at that time.

Fei:.......[starts to realized that maybe he has accused Man wrongly...]

Fei: Let's forgot about Man. But I really hope, hope that you can let me take care of you and Sum Oiy. Let me be husband and father I haven't had a chance to be.

Quin: Fei, I'm very happy that you finally asked me. But...

Fei: But what?

Quin: Fei, the worst thing that can happen to a woman is to watch another woman take her place in the life of the man she loves. I've been there and I know the feeling. I do not wish that one day if Chin Chin decides to come back, sees you and I together in that same apartment that you and her use to be in.

Fei: But we will not....

Quin[interruped]: Fei, don't make me, please.

Fei[signs]: If you think this is the best, then I will respect your wish. [immediately change into a happy mode.] But...

Quin: Now it's your turn to play but?

Fei[trying to hint something]: You know, it will be more difficult for us. [lightly pulling on to Quin's shirt back and forth.] You know what i'm talking about.

Quin: No, I don't know what you are trying to say.

Fei: The question will always be, your place or my place. [giving Quin eye contact.]

Quin: Ohhh! You, you....then I guess somebody has to suffer! ...........


MEANWHILE, AT THE SAME TIME IN THE APT....
[May is trying to fall asleep in her room but it's just not working for her. She rolls back and forth in her bed. She finally decides that she needs some assistance to help her sleep. She got up and headed to the kitchen for a glass of milk. Oddly, Man and Nam is also in the kitchen...]
Nam[slams his fist on a wall]:......I won't let it happen to her again.

Man: Please, please don't do anything stupid that will not benefit the situation.

Nam: If....[see May standing by the door.] May?! [Man turned around as well.]

May: Nam, I'm really fine. Whatever you have in mind, like Man said, don't do it. [Nam and Man kept quiet.] I'm really happy that you are so concern.

Nam: Yes, I am.

May[smiles happily]: Thank you. [goes and get her milk.] I just really came for this, not to bud in your conversation.

Man: No, it's nothing important.

May: I'll really go to sleep now.

Nam: Ok. [May walks out.] I have to get going now. [Man closes the door for Nam.]


[Quin is in the elevator. She doesn't no why, but she is beginning to feel weird about something. Now she tries to make herself think, ponder back on the day of the incident. The scenes are flashing back into her mind. She is visualizing it over and over. She sees herself back at the time where they found Man in the room. She suddenly decided to double check on Man's shoes. She is getting closer and closer at staring at her shoes.....]
Quin[stunned expression]: Oh god, Man DIDN'T even wear sneaker that night. It was a party. [completely confused and lost. What is this suppose to mean now,? she thinks.]

[Quin finally got off the elevator and goes back into the apartment.]
Man: You're back. Nam just left.

Quin: Oh really? Oh Man, can you get me some tea?

Man: Sure. [steps into the kitchen.]

Quin(there is something I need to make clear....)[she goes over to the stack of shoes. She picks up Man's sneakers. She lifts to see the bottom of it. And there, the red paint does exist. She doesn't know what this means but it doesn't feel right to her....]
Man[walking out]: Here's your tea. [She sees Quin, who picked up her sneakers. There eyes met. Man, with her eyes opening wide, shockingly dropped the cup of tea she was holding. The glass cup broked and left scattered pieces of glasses everywhere. Quin is mesmerized by Man's reaction. She is beginning to think, is this reaction necessary if, if she really has nothing to do with it?..........]


Tin talk: Ok, ok, what does this all really mean? Where is this all heading to? Now do you still believe that Man is innocent, anymore? If she is, what is with her reaction? And is there still a better explaination to the several evidences against her? If god forbid, she is guilty, why is she doing all this? And now Quin knows about it, what will you think is going to happen next? Do you think they all trusted Man wrongly now? And what is with the 1 to 1 conversation with Nam and Man? When did they ever get so close? When will Nam and May really get together? Well Chin Chin ever come back? Will Fei and Quin's relation stay at this pace forever? Stay tune.....
