Chapter 7

It turned out to be the same apartment Fei and Quin were planning to buy for their marriage. He went in and looked around the place
which had everything he knows Quin likes. It made him think back alot of memories with Quin. He sat on the sofa and closed his
eyes to think....

At Quin’s apartment . . . May turned the television on with quite a loud volume.
Quin: Shhhh!! Sum Oiy is finally asleep.
May (turns the television off) : sorry.
Quin : it's okay. it’s getting really late now, why don’t you stay over and sleep here?
May: Ok, we have to make up for all those years that we haven't kept in contact. (to Nam) Won't you feel weird listening to girls talk
?
Nam (joking) : I don't mind listening if you don't mind letting me staying.
Quin : Sure you can stay, only if you let us try on this new facial mask that I bought and also, if you let us do your nails. hehe!
Nam: I think I should leave now.
Quin : Are you sure? You'll be missing out on a lot! Ok, I'll bring you out.
Nam (talking to May) : don't stay up to late or else you won't know what time to wake up tomorrow for work.
May (raises her hand to her head, like the way they greet another police officer) : yes sir.
Nam (to Quin) : take care.
Quin : i will.
Nam leaves and Quin closes the door.
May : Boy, he can really be a brag (cherng hay).
Quin : i know, but it shows that he really cares
May : okay let's talk
Quin and May both sat on the sofa and began chatting...
May: I’m not sure if you think it’s time to tell me but I can sure sense something.
Quin: Sense what?
May: I know there is something between you and Fei. It seems like I’m the only one who don’t know the whole story cause the guys
try to be as alert as possible. I can tell. Aside from Fei, I suspect Nam too. Ok, you gotta tell me today or forever hold your peace.
Quin: Ok, Ok, Ok, I know that i have to tell you sooner or later or else you're going to hunt me down.
May looks at Quin like telling her to talk, go on.
Quin: Ok, I met Nam 3 years ago when I moved to NY. We worked at the same police station and he was really nice to me. I know
he likes me but I just couldn’t accept anyone. Even though we say we are god-siblings, I know he still has feeling for me.
May: He seems very caring for you, why don’t you give the guy a chance?

(Before reading the next few part, if you have the song, “Love Takes Time” by Mariah Carey, please play it until the end of May and
Quin’s conversation to get the right mood for what Quin has to say!)

Quin has a sad expression: I can’t, I was deeply hurt once before. I can't afford to be hurt again.
May with an expression like she once was in the same situation: (signs) I understand.
May quickly ask her something to not let Quin have the chance of asking about her past.
May: Ok, what about Fei?
Quin: Fei, what can I say. He was my ex-bf. You are my best friend. You are the only one I’m going to tell. If by any chance a third
person hears about this, I will send the ICAC after you, promise?
May: Ok, I won’t tell anyone. You know I won’t. Wait, does this have to do with Sum Oiy?
Quin: Yes. I have been with Fei for a year and so. When I was with him, I knew about his past. about his past gf, Chin Chin who
disappeared for 3 years, it’s a long story. We went through many twists and turns to be together. But our happiness didn’t last for
long. No matter how much love i showed for Fei, i knew that Chin Chin was still #1 in his heart. We even planned to get married, until
Chin Chin shows up again, which ruined my whole life. I can’t really blame her since she was Fei’s first love. What she went thru for
the past 3 years when she disappeared was unbearable. She deserves Fei back. He owes her too much (tears started to run down
Quin’s face).
May hands Quin a tissue: Are you ok?
Quin continues to talk: You can say I had no choice into what has happened to me now. To look at it at a good way, maybe God
saw I had nothing left at that time and decided to give me Sum Oiy. In another way, God is maybe making me suffer to give me Sum
Oiy at that time. One women flying to NY, finding out she was pregnant, can’t do anything about it cause the man she loves can’t be
with her. Going thru labor without a husband by my side, was very painful. I had no one. Giving birth to Sum Oiy, gave me asthma
because I was too weak and couldn’t adjust to NY’s weather. It gave me alot of health problems but I over came that. The worst pain
was overcoming Fei. But I truely have to thank God for giving me Sum Oiy , for what she has turn out to be. She is the only thing
lefted in my life. You can say I lived till now because of her(or chaung dou yee ka, hiy yan wei sum Oiy).
May: You still love Fei alot!
Quin crying: Yes, I do! But I have to pretend I have no feeling for Fei, I can’t let myself step into the puddle anymore. May, I don’t
know if I can stand it anymore but I know I will. No one knows what pain I had to go thru for the past three years, the pain I will
always have in my heart.
May quickly hugs Quin. Both crying!
May : don't worry, im sure that everything will turn out fine

Next day....
The phone rang at Quin’s apt. Quin picks it up...
Quin (still sleeping) : Hello?
Man: Hello sleepyhead, guess who i am ?

Quin a little bit awake but confused by the phone call
Man : Quin, it’s me, Ah Man.
Quin: Man? I thought you're flight is tomorrow?
Man: I really missed HK. I came back early.
Quin: Ok, where are you now? Let me pick you up.
Man: You don’t have to, I’m downstairs at you building!
Quin (alarmed and fully awake) : Downstairs? I’ll be right down.
May wakes up
May: What’s happening? Who's that?
Quin: My friend Man came back from China. She's going to be living here and she’s downstairs. I’ll be back.
Quin is running out the door
May screaming : hey, you forgot to brush your teeth
Downstairs... Man sees Quin...
Man: Quin!
Quin: Man, so happy to see you again.
Man: I haven’t seen you for a long time. Sorry, I didn’t reply to your email yet. But I don’t have to now!
Quin smiles: It’s ok. Let’s go up first, you must be really tried. My friend is up there to. I’ll introduce you to her.
Man : you didn't have to rush down here so fast. Look, people's looking at you in your pajamas and slippers.
Quin realizing that she forgot to change : oh my god (say for), hurry up and get inside, this is embarrasing.
They both went back into the Quin’s apt... May came out of the bathroom dressed.
Quin: May, this is Man, Man this is May. May is my long time best friend.
Man and May greeted each other.
May: Sorry, I have to get back to the police station now. I’ll see you both sometime later.
Quin and Man: Bye!
Man: May works at the police station?
Quin: Yes, she is also a cop. And the funny thing is that she is working for Chi San.
Man: Oh, really?
Quin: By the way, did you tell Chi San that you came back to hong kong?
Man: Yes, I told him but he doesn’t know that I’ll be back this early.
Quin: Ok, why don't you surprise him.
Man: Nahhh. This time I’m planning to stay in HK. I found a good teaching at the ophanage. I think I will enjoy this job and because
it’s closer to home!
Quin: That’s great. You can live with me as long as you want!
Man: Thanks!
Quin showing where ah Man is going to stay
Quin : you will be sleeping here
Man : thanks
Quin: Oh, since I have no work today. Why don’t I walk around with you today and go drink tea (yun cha)
Man: I didn’t know you like to do that?
Quin: Things change, people change!
Man smiles and walked up to an opened door.
Man: This must be Sum Oiy. She is very cute!
Quin: Yes, she is very good girl (gwhy lui).
Man: For all these years, you never told me who her father is. But, I will respect you.
Quin: Thanks! Ok, let’s wake up Sum Oiy and go yum cha!

All three of walked in the streets. They walked by the police station. Both Quin and Man frowned.
Sum Oiy: Mommy, Auntie Man, why are you guys so sad?
Quin and Man looked at each other and smiled.
Quin (bends down to sum oiy's height) : little girls shouldn't be so nosy.
Sum Oiy : yes (hie)
Sum Oiy began to run around.
Quin (talks to Man): It’s about time for May to get off work. Why don’t we go pick her up.
Man: Ok
Quin and Man started to realized where is Sum Oiy..
Quin and Man: Sum Oiy, where are you?
Quin found Sum Oiy up the corner..
Quin: what are you doing here? Didn't mommy always tell you not to run off like that?
Sum Oiy : sorry
Quin stares at the kid until he disappears by the corner: Who's that little kid you were taking to?
Sum Oiy: Mommy, I saw Gor Gor(the kid) crying. I went up to him to ask him why.
Man: Then what did the kid tell you?
Sum Oiy: Gor Gor, only said that he is very scared. And then he heard Mommy and Auntie Man so he left.
Quin and Man were feeling weird about this kid.
Quin: Hopefully this little kid will find help sooner or later. Sum Oiy, We are going to pick up Auntie May now.
Sum Oiy: Ok(orh).
They walked in. Man looked around, trying to refresh her memory of the station. As they walked into their department, May saw them
and stopped to talk...
May: Hey, you guys came to pick me up?
Quin: Yes, are you ready to go.
Man was looking around trying to see where Chi San is.
May: Yes, i was just about to get something and then leave. Man, are you looking for someone?
Man: Errr, no!
May : okay, just wait here for me to come back
Quin and Man : okay

May runs off, and Sum Oiy runs around the room
Quin (whispers to ah Man) : He is right there, he just moved his room.
Man: I’m not looking for him.
Quin : how do you know who im talking about? I was talking about Fei!
Man : lucky guess?
Quin : i was just joking
Quin: Ok, whatever.
Fei and Chi San came out of Chi San’s room and saw them....
Chi San happily: Man, you’re here! When did you come back?
Man: Just this morning.
Quin proposely looked the other way and May came back and saw her.
Fei didn’t say a word.
Man: I’m living at Quin’s house now!
May : okay we can leave now.
Man : i have to go now.
Chi San: Ok, let’s meet next time.
Sum Oiy (holding the candy box that Fei always have) : mommy, i want candy.
Quin (yelling at her) : Sum Oiy, how can you be so rude. Didn't i teach you not to touch peoples things!
Fei : it's okay, kids are like that.

Fei goes to Sum Oiy.
Fei : sum oi, did you want candy?
Sum Oiy nods her head.
Fei : i'll give you one if you call me uncle (suk suk).
Sum Oiy : suk suk.
Fei : good girl, here uncle is going to give you some candy

Fei is about to give her the candies when Quin carrys her away in her hands.
Quin : were gonna go out to eat dinner, i don't want her to spoil her appetite. (to May and Man) let's go.
The girls all left. Fei and Chi San stared at them till they disappeared.
